The 2007-2008 Graduate School Master’s Scholarship Program (GSMS) is intended to provide tuition assistance to WSU Master’s students who otherwise would depend upon loan fund assistance to pursue their graduate degrees. The award will provide payment for the resident or non-resident assessment as appropriate to the award recipient. Recipients who demonstrate need of less than the equivalent of six graduate credits will receive only the amount of scholarship assistance up to that of their demonstrated need. There is no requirement to pay back scholarship award funds. Recipients may reapply for subsequent academic year awards. Note that there is a separate application and FAFSA process for Spring/Summer 2007 awards.

All scholarships administered through the Wayne State University Admissions and Student Financial Aid requires submission of an application. Provisions of the private scholarships will stipulate the enrollment status that the applicant/recipient must maintain. The required enrollment status may be either full-time or half-time. At the undergraduate level, enrollment of a minimum of 12 credits is full-time and a minimum of six credits is half-time. At the graduate level, enrollment of a minimum of eight credits is full-time and a minimum of four credits is half-time. Abdenour Family Endowed Scholarship of varying amounts, dependent upon funds available, is limited to full-time students who meet all National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and WSU athletic, financial aid and academic requirements. Recipients must demonstrate exceptional abilities in the area of sports training.

Recipients must be minority women (Detroit resident) with leadership skills, financial need and have a minimum 2.50 GPA. Scholarship may be used for tuition or educational expenses.

Award open to any public relations students entering their junior or senior year who have demonstrated academic excellence and the ability to make a meaningful contribution in the area of public relations.

Activity Award, of varying amounts, normally $250-$1400 paid fall and winter semesters, dependent upon funds available is limited to students who participate and perform in the WSU dance companies and other departmental events. The award is renewable for four consecutive years based on continuance in the dance program.

David Adamany Endowed Fund for Pathways to Teaching Program provides awards of a minimum of $1,000, pending available funding, for tuition, books and other educational expenses. This award is limited to teachers in the Detroit Public Schools who are enrolled in the College of Education’s Pathways to Teaching program and working toward state certification.

This scholarship, funded by the Charles H. Gershenson trust, in honor of former Wayne State University President and Professor of Law David Adamany, is awarded to law students who are outstanding scholars in constitutional law.

Tom Adams Football Endowed Scholarship of varying amounts, dependent upon funds available, is limited to full-time students who meet all NCAA and WSU athletic, financial aid, and academic requirements. Recipients must demonstrate exceptional abilities in the sport of football.

Wendell P. Addington Memorial Scholarship is merit-based and given to a student in the master’s of art program in history who enrolled part-time for two consecutive terms.

Aida Cannarsa Endowed Memorial Scholarship of varying amounts, dependent upon funds available, is limited to students majoring in or otherwise demonstrating a strong interest in art, art education, history of art, theatre, or dance who demonstrate financial need. Preference is given to students enrolled in art education.

Ralph and Grace Ainsworth Scholarship of varying amounts, dependent upon funds available, is limited to full-time students who maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA and demonstrate financial need.

provides awards of varying amounts, dependent upon funds available, limited to co-op students in the WSU College of Engineering. Recipient selection is based on academic achievement (at least a 2.7 GPA) character, and leadership qualities, with emphasis placed on financial need.

The Elvis Smith Alford, M.D. and Nellie Corbin Alford Endowed Memorial Scholarship Fund will be awarded to a rising 4 th year male Medical School student based upon academic excellence. The School of Medicine Office of Financial Aid and the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs will make the selection.

The Allesee Housing Fund provides financial assistance for costs associated with living expenses including students’ monthly rent and or dormitory charges. Demonstrated need is required. Award: $500-$1500 per semester.

This fund provides awards that enable the department’s most outstanding students to study internationally for both long- and short-term residencies. Interested students are encouraged to use the junior year for international study and should begin planning for study abroad in the fall of the sophomore year.

Allesee Undergraduate Dancers in Residence Housing Scholarship of varying amounts, normally $1500-$3000, dependent upon funds available, is limited to students majoring in dance who have been admitted to WSU. The award is renewable for four consecutive years, based on continuance in the dance program. Recipients must maintain a minimum cumulative 2.5 GPA, and a minimum 3.0 GPA in dance courses. The application deadline is in May for the following fall semester.

Maggie Allesee Talent Scholarship, of varying amounts, normally $500- $1000 paid fall and winter semesters, dependent upon funds available, is limited to students majoring in dance who have been admitted to WSU. The award is renewable for four consecutive years, based on continuance in the dance program. Recipients must maintain a minimum cumulative 2.5 GPA and a minimum 3.0 GPA in dance courses. The application deadline is in early December. An audition in January or February is required.

Limited to full-time undergraduate students majoring in engineering who demonstrate financial need, outstanding scholastic achievement, and leadership qualities.

Alumni Association Annual Scholarship of varying amounts, dependent upon funds available, is limited to full-time students with the academic rank of sophomore or higher who maintain a minimum 2.75 GPA and demonstrate financial need. Participation in a Wayne State University student activity is required.

This fund, known as the Wayne State University School of Business Administration Alumni Association Endowed Scholarship, is established to recognize scholarship achievement, to encourage continued progress, and to provide assistance to students in financing their education at Wayne State University.

Applications for 2007-2008 David Adamany-WSU Alumni Association Endowed Scholarships are due March 01, 2007. The scholarship program recognizes the contributions of student activities to the student’s educational experience and to campus life. Applicants must submit an official application, including a personal statement on how student activities have enhanced their WSU education, two letters of recommendations, a minimum GPA of 2.75, sophomore status or above (Fall 2007), Michigan resident and a WSU transcript. Applications are evaluated on the scope of university activities, student leadership, quality of recommendations and personal statement. Awards cover tuition for full or part time study, with a maximum of 12 credit hours per semester (Fall and Winter) for undergraduate study. Students enrolled at the post-bachelor status or pursuing a second bachelor’s degree are not eligible. Alumni Scholars Endowment Fund will be awarded to full time first year medical school students based on their scholastic achievement, community service and leadership qualities. Recipients will be selected by the Deans Scholarship Committee. The scholarships are renewable provided the student remains in good academic standing.

A distinctive replica of an antique Revolutionary War Mortar and Pestle is awarded annually to the graduating student who, in the judgment of the faculty, exhibits exceptional interest, aptitude, and achievement in pharmaceutical administration. The recipient is eligible for a competitive $2000 scholarship.

This scholarship fund is established to recognize scholarship achievement, to encourage continued progress, and to provide assistance to students in financing their education in the School of Business Administration. Applicants must demonstrate financial need.

Portia Fields Anderson (aka Freeda Frump) Endowed Scholarship of varying amounts, normally $500, dependent upon funds available, is limited to dance majors who are enrolled full-time. The dance faculty selects recipients based on scholastic achievement and talent, and a demonstrated commitment to dance at WSU. Financial need may be considered. Recipients must have completed at least 12 credits at WSU. Applicants must submit a letter of application, not to exceed one page, explaining why they should receive the award. The application deadline is in early December for a winter semester award.

Sophie Angelescu Scholarship of $800, in memory of Valter Poole, is awarded to outstanding music majors who play an orchestral instrument.

The purpose of the American Planning Association Planning Fellowship Program is to foster increased minority interest in the study of urban planning at the graduate level. This will provide increased minority participation in the planning profession, and ultimately, greater service to communities across the nation.

The Program is open to first and second year graduate-level students.
An eligible applicant is a member of one of the following minority groups — African American, Hispanic American and Native American, a citizen of the United States, a student enrolled or officially accepted for enrollment in a graduate planning program that has been accredited by the PAB (Planning Accreditation Board), and a student who is able to document the need for financial assistance.

Arab-American Endowed Scholarship of varying amounts, dependent upon funds available, is limited to full- or half time students whose parent(s) is/are of Arab descent. Applications must include a written statement demonstrating their interest in Arabic culture. Recipient selection is based upon scholastic achievement, desirable qualities of character and leadership, and financial need.

Arab-American Endowed Scholarship of varying amounts, dependent upon funds available, is limited to full- or half-time students whose parent(s) is/are of Arab descent. Applications must include a written statement demonstrating their interest in Arabic culture. Recipient selection is based upon scholastic achievement, desirable qualities of character and leadership, and financial need.

Dennis W. Archer Foundation Scholarship of $5,000 is limited to residents of the city of Detroit or graduates of Cassopolis High School who are undergraduate students in degree-granting programs and have financial need. A minimum 2.5 GPA is required, but special consideration may be given to students who work more than 10 hours per week. The total number of scholarships is dependent upon funds available, with one awarded to a student who has achieved junior level standing and one awarded to a student who has achieved senior level standing.

An award of $1000 is made to a pharmacy student in recognition of achievement in the pharmacy program.

Art Education Alumni Scholarship of $1000 per semester is limited to full or part-time undergraduate students who have successfully completed at least one semester in art education at WSU. Applicants are selected based on demonstrated financial need, scholastic achievement, character, or all three. This award is for tuition, books and other educational expenses.

Art Therapy Scholarships of varying amounts, dependent upon funds available, are available to full or part-time Graduate or Undergraduate students in the art therapy program who demonstrate scholastic achievement.

Limited to full-time undergraduate students who are of at least sophomore rank and have attended WSU for two semesters. Students must demonstrate financial need, outstanding scholastic achievement, and leadership qualities.

Dr. C. Gary Artinian Endowed Pre-Medicine Scholarship of varying amounts ($500-$700), dependent upon funds available, is limited students enrolled full-time in pre-medicine study at Wayne State University. Students accepted for full-time pre-medicine study at WSU may apply. Recipient selection is based on scholastic achievement (a minimum 3.0 GPA) and financial need. This award must be applied toward tuition.

ASCAP Hubbell Scholarship of $500 is awarded to outstanding music majors pursuing a degree in composition.

This fund is established to recognize scholarship achievement, to encourage continued progress, and to provide assistance to students in financing their education in the School of Business Administration. Recipient must be an Accounting Major.

Avery Crew Scholarship of $250 is awarded to outstanding music majors studying voice.

Maximum Award: $2,000 This program provides supplemental research funds for individual students who are successful in obtaining monetary support specifically related to a research project in excess of $6,000 per year from an external agency. Awards are made in the amount of $1,000 for the student and $1,000 to his/her advisor. An academic scholarship or appointment to an institutional training grant does not qualify a student for this support program. Money is to be used to support the externally funded research project, e.g. research equipment, subject payment, database subscriptions. Beverly Bain Endowed Memorial Scholarship of varying amounts, dependent upon funds available, is available to full- or part-time graduate or undergraduate students who demonstrate financial need. The award is for tuition, books and other educational expenses. Recipients are eligible for repeat awards but must re-apply each year.

Marcia D. Bain Scholarship Endowment Fund provides an award of $1,000 limited to graduate students (MSN or PhD) who have a defined interest in psychiatric nursing and demonstrated outstanding scholastic achievement (a minimum 3.5 GPA).

Howard Baker Foundation General Scholarship of full-time (12 credit hours maximum) tuition for two semesters is limited to undergraduate students at Wayne State University. Students accepted for full-time study at WSU may apply. Recipients of this award must be Detroit high school graduates, residents of the city of Detroit and United States citizens who have a minimum cumulative 2.5 GPA at the time of selection and financial need. This award is renewable provided recipients maintain a minimum cumulative 2.75 GPA at the end of each academic year and continue to meet the other stated requirements. Applicants must submit a brief written biographical statement and academic transcript (high school, if appropriate) to The Howard Baker Foundation Selection Committee, which will select the semi-finalists. To determine their future award eligibility, the Howard Baker Foundation Selection Committee will periodically review recipients’ progress/qualifications. By signing the Wayne State University Private Scholarships Application, students authorize the university to communicate their names and qualifications to the selection committee. The Howard Baker Foundation Selection Committee may interview the semifinalists to select the final scholarship recipients. The decisions of the committee are final. The committee will periodically review recipients’ progress/qualifications to determine future eligibility. This award must be applied toward tuition, fees, and required books with no cash to recipients.
